So, I was replacing the bulbs on my headlight units today and had to move the air filter housing around to actually be able to get to the bulb connectors...

What a mess. I supposed this is to be expected on a 25 years old car, but.

It's like a mus musculus was living there! 😀

The cover doesn't look as bad, but...

I thought the filters were paper. Some kind of upgrade?

Same here. I have some sound insulating self adhesive foam leftovers from my speaker install. Will see if it fits. Although ever since I removed this mess I can not see why it was there in the first place. Overkill imho.

And throw this filter in the bin. The paper one is the best to use.

First job I did when I got my car was to clean that sound deadening out of the air box....after 20 years its turning to dust which is either going to clog up your air filter or worse flow straight into your engine :(

+1 for an M43 badge

Standard air filters usually are paper elements, That could be a type of sport filter i.e. Piper-Cross etc.

Tony.

But these sport/free flow need oiling, cleaning, and care, let aside that many times the oil contaminates the MAF and kills it?
Thats what this forum told me. No?

Absolutely, but that's the fault of the person applying the excess amount of oil, not the filter. I'm not advocating the use of said filters either just saying thats what the one in the picture looked like.
