Advice required on best method of reducing Exhaust Drone on 2.8i Z3

The previous owner of my 2.8I Z3 Roadster had a full stainless steel sports after market exhaust fitted with twin round tail pipes. The exhaust sounds great at start up but drones quite loudly between two and three thousand revs. I have fully sound insulated the trunk which has made little to no difference to the interrior noise level. I was wondering if any member had fitted Exhaust tail pipe bafflers to address this problem and if so did they make any difference to the exhaust noise level. It would be a shame to have to change the system back to a stock exhaust and any advice on how to remedy the issue without having to take such a draconian measure would be appeciated.

There was post on here in the last couple of months on an "S" tube mod done on an exhaust that was tuned to cut out the droning frequencies. It covered a bit about how to design it.

Didn't book mark it and can't see it with a quick search. If you look you may find it.

You could take it to an exhaust specialist and get them to add some baffling to the exhaust.

Had a new S/S back box made and fitted by Long Life Taunton and the drone at 30/40 MPH was unbearabletook it to their head office in Bridport and they changed it FOC and we even find a bit of drone at same speed in the 3.0L think its a fact of life and we put up with it as the rest of the sound is great Geoff

I've even been thinking of a complete new system. I've filled in the enquiry form for Powerflow for two different centres so far but didn't get a response from either!

Here's the start of the J-pipe posts. It wasn't easy to find. I had to find the YT video, then search on here using it...

Thanks Geoff - There's one about 30 miles away so I've asked for a quote.

This J pipe stuff looks interesting - perhaps aftermarket exhausts will start to incorporate them as standard.

Thank you for all your replies which have given me much food for thought. Fitting a J Pipe branch resonator appears to be the most effective method of reducing the drone level. I think my next port of call will be a trip to my local performance exhaust specialist workshop to see if they can recommend a Resonator that will be compatible with my vehicle.

Genuine BMW system - they are ££ but last 20+ years. I learned the hard way years ago!

I could not agree more stock is best and would have been my choice had the previous owner not opted for an expensive aftermarket stainless steel performance replacement.

Then just replace the muffler that you have for one that's like stock or even a stock one if you can find one.

I had a good look at my exhaust system today and it has two down pipes from the maniford which merge into a single pipe, then the cat, then two silencers/muffler boxes and twin tail pipes emerge at the bumper. Stainless steel from the Cat onwards. I am tempted to have the exhaust cat onwards replaced with a stock system and sell the stainless steel section. Thanks for the advice.

You may well find a good used system from a 2.8/3.0. They were made by Boysen or Eberspaecher and were of the highest quality. They are very heavy being double skinned and full of stainless steel.

I didn't get any response from Longlife either! Longlife & Powerflow are franchisees of Topgear. Either the problem is with Topgear or their franchisees aren't really needing the business at present.

Schmiedmann sell a new BMW rear system for around £780 plus postage - that's for an early car with the single Vanos engine. You don't say what year or engine type you have.

I struggled to get £50 for any of the good used 2.8 rear systems I had.

Hi folks

The J-Pipe article was me:

https://zroadster.org/threads/z3-2-8-based-ferrari-250-build.45859/page-4 go to post #80

The J-Pipe killed about 80% of the drone.

I would however say that I wanted a loud, burbly exhaust as mine is a Fauxrarri and should sound more racey than a Z3 2.8 (sets off car alarms when under load).

If you are looking for a nice smooth cruising experience forget a custom Stainless setup, unless you plan on fitting reasonably large backboxes/mufflers, they are inherently noisier. Go instead for the already mentioned OEM setup. Mine originally came with OEM setup with an AC Schnitzer backbox (now sold to @spurs fan in a coupe ) which sounded great on a Z and was drone-free.

If you want SS system contact Dave or Mark at Redhill Classics:

Great quality and price. SS cat-back exhaust with no silencers £280 (would be £380 ish with backboxes), J-Pipe £90.

You pay your money and take your choice!
