I've adopted an unloved 2001 2.2 Z3, it needed a lot of TLC but failed the MOT because the airbag light is on. I think it went off in a past life & has been repaired. I've had a mechanic look at it, he tried resetting it but the fault code comes back on again. Any ideas as to how to solve the problem, he thinks the ECU unit requires resetting. I need advice as to how & where I could get this done, many thanks. Dave

You need to find out the fault code and that will tell you the specific problem. Most likely a bad connector, or pre-tensioner fault. If you plan on keeping the car I recommend getting a tool to read and reset the airbag. Mine goes off every few months and i can usually reset it.

The most common fault we get with airbag lights is what they call the squib. that's the part under the steering wheel ( some call it a clock spring). You do need to get the codes read and identify the fault from the codes rather than trying to re set.

Thank you both, I'm not intending to keep it as I already have a 2.8. I'm selling this one to a friend so I want it sorted. Is there a particular code reader you'd recommend?

I had an airbag light problem that wouldn't go away, in the end swapped the airbag ECU for an identical part number 2nd hand one, works perfectly.

I've got these 2 off cars that I am/have broken, also have 1 from a 2.8 1997 and one from a 1.9 2002 reg that aren't off the car yet. Unit is between the gear shifter and radio, not that easy to get to.
