Looking for advice on air intake. Have standard airbox on 2.0 Z3 but thinking of installing either induction kit, panel filter, cone filter would appreciate any advice.
Thanks

I fitted a Simota induction kit on my 2.0 Z3 many moons ago along with an Eisenmann exhaust back box. I swear it made the engine rev smoother, and it sounded awesome. That said, marginal if any gain. Panel filters are basically not worth the cost.

Some form of heat shield and cold air routing from the front of the car direct to the cone will help for sure. Just don't expect much from a 2.0 engine, it's why I changed from my 2.0 to my first 3.0 Z4 - expensive way to get +80bhp though!

As said, these bits of kit sound great (make a great whooooosh) but will give marginal gains. One with a surround to ensure a flow of fresh air and to prevent heat soak. I was following @Lee In his Zed, I thought my window was cracked open because I could hear a whistling, turns out it was his car 30 yards up the road =)) If it sounds faster, it must be

Change filter for piper filter fits straight into your air box will give better air flow these engines need fresh air
The k&n cone will give hot air flow as the heat from engine will be pulled back into the engine

Your paper air filter is less restrictive than an oiled K+N or Simota filter.

Using a Dremel and some fibreglass, the air box can be modified to make it flow better. I measured my standard airbox at 444cfm @ 28" H2O, the modified one was 485cfm @ 28" H2O.

Heat shielding the airbox will reduce the temperature of the inlet charge, and make the air denser.

Got a Simota on my 2.8, sounds amazing , but to me it feels as though the engine is gasping when under hard acceleration and not reving as freely. Considering going back to a standard air box.

Finally got her back on the road after changing shocks, pads and discs and the sound from the proram air filter is sweet. I haven't lost any power and have gained a lovely growl👍

A friend (!) swapped the inlet manifold, air filter and cold air trunking on his 2.8 with rigorous testing between to record 0-60 time improvements. He got a better improvement from cleaning the MAF sensor with electrical switch contact cleaner.

The real problem with the 2.0 and the reason it gets a bad rap is it’s restricted from the factory.
Do a search for M54 manifold upgrade, “the” best modification I’ve ever done to mine. Doesn’t need to be off a 3.0 I just bought one that had the larger inlet ports it came off a 525 sport

Your’ll need the matching DISA valve and a throttle body adapter plate kit available on the bay, about £100 for the parts and took me about 3 hours to fit.
I ditched my cold air intake setup and now have the standard air box and a Pipercross filter.

Ive got one very similar.
Had a drilled air box before but this is louder.
Mine likes yours is single vanos.
Has always felt very free revving compared to other (but I’ve always had a free flow exhaust, think you do too?)

try a stock one and see but doubt it’s the air box on it’s own. How old are crank and camshaft sensors?
My MAF is still probably but those caused ‘strangled’ performance issues.
