Activated Charcoal Filter, Is it needed?

Pictured below is what I believe to be a charcoal EVAP canister. Could someone please confirm this?

As seen below one of the pipes connecting to this canister has split. In the image above this pipe is the blue pipe that runs vertically in the image.
It has torn where it meets the cylinder and doesn't look to be replaceable, without replacing the whole canister.

Is this canister actually needed?

Yes, that black cylindrical part is the charcoal canister, often simply called the ‘purge can’.
The blue lines carry fuel tank vapour into the can and from the can to a vent valve.
The black line runs up front to the intake plenum via an ecu controlled purge valve.
The damage shown is on the fuel tank side and means you are probably venting tank vapour straight to atmosphere like a 1970’s vehicle would do. This fault should not affect the running of your engine and will not fail any UK emissions test but could set a DTC via the on board diagnostics.
My advice would be not to stress about it too much but get it fixed when time and funds allow.
