Don't know about Active8, but years ago I used some additive in my Ford Cortina, made the engine oil sludge up faster, did nothing for the engine at all. It promised the same things as Active8

All these additives are a bit snake oil in my opinion.

Just a rip off.
Only thing I'll use is a good flush to get rid of the old stuff before new oil goes in. Unless there's a specific problem such as noisy hydraulic tappets then I'd use some additive specifically for that.

The product actually comes with a guarantee. We have something similar called Slick50. Unless you have kept records of mileage and fuel usage like I do it may be hard to prove a case and quantify the savings. If there is savings then the engine is being protected. It is expensive stuff but may be worth it in my opinion [providing you can prove it works]. If the cost savings actually add up in theory and you have records go for it and let us know. I might have a go myself actually.
I recant the above after reading the following article. Looks like it may coat parts but contributes to BLOCKING oil passages therefore contributing to wear! Hmmm..

There have been a number of similar products over the years - STP, Slik50 Ametech to name a few. To my knowledge (and correct me if I am wrong), none of the major car manufacturers recommend using anything other than a high quality branded engine oil in their cars. I've always used a decent oil and changed the oil regularly without any problems and never seen the need to 'enhance' the slippery stuff in the engine.
Sure, when I started mucking around with cars back in the sixties, engine oil was relatively basic...but so then was the technology used in (most) cars. Modern engineering tolerances and technology have been developed in line with modern lubricant developments.....I think I'm happy with that.

I would agree with that in general but will say that in certain circumstances ie noisy tappets etc. a specialist treatment can and does rectify problems.

agreed, one that is designed for rectification of noisy tappets can help - usually a high detergent flush and a decent oil change will rectify most noisy tappet issues but if they are still being difficult, mechanical intervention usually isn't too far away
At the end of the day there is no substitute for regular oil and filter changes using good quality oil and parts.

I had my 66 mustang 57 chev entered in a car show several years ago and the sponsors were having a guess how long an engine in a car they had would run with all oil drained out and a brick on the throttle. My guesses were 1 1/2 and 2 hr t 24 min. Later that day they came over and asked if I wanted the car or 224$? I took the cash and shut the car down, still running full throttle. We let it sit for 5 min and it started right back up to everyone's amazement. Goes to show how good the oils are at protecting your inner engine. Someone bought the car and put the engine in a model A and it's still running today, smoke free!! JIM
