Usually, this likely indicates a faulty sensor.
However, my light has been on a couple of weeks so booked it in for repair. Following a system scan, seemingly, the fault is with the ABS "brain"; the pump itself is OK but is not receiving any input. Garage can have the module rebuilt, but not for a few weeks.
As my Z3 is an early car (Apr 97 build) it doesn't have DCS/ASC (traction control) so the module is quite bespoke I think?
Grateful for any thoughts on this.
Cheers,
Ian

Can anybody suggest a code reader please for my April 1997 M44 please?
I have a "Car Diagnostic Tool" which resets the airbag light, but doesn't seem to do much else (yellow in pic below).

Also have a CAS804 code reader which is OBD2 (pic below) and doesn't (I guess unsurprisingly) work for my OBD1 car.
Have scanned the internet but can't identify a suitable reader; any steer would be appreciated.

I need some info.
does your car have the dual obds (round and rectangle)?
Have you “bridged” the round one so you can read the errors from the internal one?
I would suggest the iCarsoft BMM v2 that is quite adequate for the Z but never tried it on a prefacelift so can not vouch that it will read all 45 modules acailable.

Thanks for the reply @Zephyr .
Only one port under the bonnet, with 4 pins (yours seems to have 5?). Think the rectangle port in cockpit is OBD2 fit, so don't have.
The iCarsoft BMM v2 appears from a quick search on Google to be for OBD2?
I am most frustrated; should be a simple purchase really, but it is not so (but might well be me)!!!

It is quite complicated as pre 98 models have the old system that not even BMW IMPA can read fully unless you are on a RS232 port laptop with the older version Ediabas - K + DCAN.
Unfortunately I will be in the UK pretty late this year (November or later) so I can not even send you over my iCarsoft by post so you can try it.
Maybe someone else can chime in and help.

Any more ideas for a pre OBD2 (April 1997 M44 Z3) code reader please?
Thanks,
Ian

Collected car today with ABS fixed after 3 weeks or so OTR.
As mentioned earlier, pump was OK; a remanufactured module/ECU was sourced and fitted. Remanufactured unit was £325.00 (inc shipping) plus VAT. Has a 12-month warranty. Don't know about value but it's good to have the car back, albeit £538.12 poorer!! :)
For completeness, a new pump (includes module) is north of £2K from BMW so think VFM is sound.

Car doesn't have ASC (or DSC) as it's an early M44 (April 1997 build). ABS is only "driver aid", thank fully!! :)
Don't know about coding to car, assuming it's just "plug and play", but don't know for certain.
