Yesterday I had to go through to Kaiapoi to pick up some stuff. Kaiapoi is about 2 1/4 hours north of Timaru if you take State Highway 1 (up the main drag) but its 2 1/2 hours if you take the inland scenic route up State highway 72/73. This second route has lots less traffic and fewer towns, so that's the way I went in my Mora edition, 2.0L Z3.

Headed off at 8:15 am and gassed up. Lovely summers day, topless and whizzing along at 100kmph/60mph in cruise control. Picked up the stuff and headed home. Stopped at the famous pie shop in Sheffield for lunch. Got home around 3 pm so went to gas up again. Only used 28.6L (6.4g). Didn't seem like nearly enough fuel, so checked that the tank was full and it was. I had done 260 miles

Went home and put the numbers into my fuel economy spreadsheet as working with liters and miles is just too hard for a quick mental fuel economy calculation. I had done 40.9 mpg or 6.33L/100km. A record for me. Often get 33 to 36 mpg on trips. I put it down to spending 90% of my time on cruise control at 100kmph/60mph, flat roads (no hills), very little traffic to pass and only 3 towns to slow down for.

Its amazing the economy you can get if you don't have to slow down.

That's a good return. I've managed 36mpg in my 2.8 over a long slow steady run a few times.

260 miles............thats a tank full in the M 🤦‍♂️

That’s good mileage - I have managed 39.5 in a 2.8 according to the centre console read out - probably not as accurate as your analysis though!:)
