Hi all, the day started out great securing myself a new job after being so let down by my current employer while I was ill. Still in the same line of work but moving to a company that have a bit more respect for their staff.
The day turned unfortunately when we were travelling to take the dogs for a walk and to check up on Jues horse. On route an awful accident happened straight in front of us involving a transit van towing a burger bar type trailer and a ford fiesta. The vehicles collided head on causing the van and trailer to roll onto it's side trapping the passenger in the cabin. Although she seemed very distrested and appeared to have a broken arm I think she was OK. The fiesta came out worse off. According to the driver of the car in front of us it flipped twice landing on its roof. I ran to the fiesta but was unable to get any doors open due to the damage. The gentleman driver had his belt on and it was holding him securely upside down in his seat. Still concious but bleeding heavily from his head. I got in best I could through the smashed window talking to him while trying to assess the situation. He was on his own, I found a clean unused cloth in his car and forced it between the roof lining and his head to try and stem the bleeding while holding his neck to stop any movement until the services arrived. This lasted about 15 minutes talking to him to try and keep him alert. It's amazing what bond you build up in such a short space of time. Once the ambulance arrived I stepped aside to allow them to do their job. Fire brigade arrived soon after getting straight to work with the jaws of life to get the man out. I was wanting to stay to see him clear from the car as I was unsure if he would make it out alive. Unfortunately an aggressive female police officer came along and told me to leave so was unable to see how he was. We know a lady who works in the control room for Notts police so we've spoken with her and she's going to let me know next week when back on shift. Fingers crossed he's OK. I've not told you all this story to ruin your days but as a warning when we're out in the zeds, we can all get a bit over zealous from time to time. Please please be careful when your out. I would hate to read a similar story invloving anyone I know. Take care all.

Good response mate. Hope the chap is OK. as an aside peeps, RTC's in the UK are on the increase for the first time in a long time. Last year's Stats for all severities was over 197,000! There are a variety of reasons for this; electronic devises being used on the run and a blasé attitude by some with the ever increasing advent of car safety systems are but just two (but probably the main ones). Take care out there.

Me and Shirl did the same thing a few years ago, we were on our way to the works Company Christmas do when we came accroos a head on on a bad bend a couple of miles from home. The road was sheet ice as it was sleeting and snowing and freezing. We stayed till the police showed up which was 2 1/2 hours later and we were dressed fro dinner. I went a few hundred yards down the road to try to slow the traffic, standing near a large traffic sign so I could dive behind it if necessary, using the screen on my phone as a light. It was all I had, I now carry a bright light in the winter. By the time the police got there the ambulance crew had got the unconscious young man out of the car and back in the world. I was wet through to the skin and shivering, we went home and forgot about going into Lincoln. After a hot shower we went across to the Swan and Paul cooked us some scampi and chips for our trouble, on the house too. He used to be a truck driver and appreciated our efforts.

Tony.

ps. Bless you both, what goes around comes around.:)

Wow quite a story Tony. Your pub landlord being an ex trucker would understand seeing hariffic accidents regularly, in our line of work with the mileage we cover it's part of the job running into accidents unfortunately. Our boss was setting us up as a "first at scene responder" putting us through a high level first aid course to assist prior to the arrival of the emergency services. He pulled the plug before it even got off the ground. T******!

Good work, you definately deserve a medal. Not something I would want to be confronted with, even as a trained first aider. Hope everybody concerned is OK.

Just goes to show how fickle the world is, and you've sampled both the highs and lows today!

It's a huge act of kindness you've performed today, and for that well done to you.

Good luck with the new job mate @Grumpy you will probably start as tea boy.........:D
Thanks h/t I think! I don't expect to be treated any differently to anyone else but the complete lack of respect for the drivers where I currently work is appalling. They are trying to get our pay in line with the warehouse guys who work the minimum wage. No disrespect to them but driving an artic is not a minimum wage job! It's cost a lot of money to get your licence and more and more money to retain it of which the company will contribute F'all! They used to be a good firm to work for but when you get that line.......your a lorry driver, if you don't like you are replaceable it sort of doesn't sit so well. So se la ve!

Hugh, when your suddenly faced with a situation it's amazing what you'll do. I'm truly not a people person really but seeing that old lad there my heart went out to him. Don't get me wrong I've made some great pals on here and that won't change but I've never been one to suffer fools gladly. I couldn't stand there while all the moron's who were poling up just stood there gorking. He needed to know he was OK and it seemed to work. Although I haven't an issue with blood I did have to take a deep breath when I submurged my hand into the puddle on the roof lining to get the cloth in. If I did anything to help save the guys life it was worth it.
On a lighter note I cut the Web between two of my fingers when a glass broke while I was washing up and I shouted Jue to help me and and she turned green and spun round and ran out the kitchen. She then in turn shouted Jack, my then 15 year old son who cracked on and got the job done. Last year I dislocated my thumb when I fell up the stairs at home. Jack came to me just as I pulled it back in, Jue was no where to be seen lol!!!

Yeah a month away, I'm doing one night away a week on this new job. That's more than enough for me mate. I am a bit of a home bird.
