Never had that problem Tony but I would go for standard black silicone.

There is no need for a patch. All that needs doing is replacing the adhesive between contact surfaces of the plug and the channel rubber. No adhesive required on top of the plug so there is no mess.Could a bicycle tyre repair patch be used? This would look tidier. I've looked at YouTube videos and the results often look a bit of a mess. I might try it or nodzeds suggestions which sounds cosmetically better
