Great link there Sean, it's on my to do list, but after watching that x8r video , I can understand why mr vanos charges what he does, there a fair bit off work involved to do the vanos seals, thankyou
Jimmy.

I'm going to order my kit this week mate, I believe Mr Vanos brings refurbed kit and does a straight swap, my mechanic will do it for £100 if I supply the kit as I don't fancy it myself, I'm hoping to do the inlet upgrade at the same time but Bimmertune seem to have disappeard and I can't find the throttle body adapter anywhere else. I have the other parts on my watch list but don't want to order them until I have the adapter.

Yep I now what your saying Sean, I don't fancy doing the vanos seals either,as for your adaptor plate,I'm sure there,s a few other company's who do them, but I can't think who there are at the moment,I'm sure you'll drop on one when you least expect to mate.
Jimmy.

The hardest part of doing the vanos seals is removing the vanos housing, plus you need to buy the special cam tool. My car is single vanos and a lot easier to do than the double vanos but you still have to remove the cam covers, injectors, etc etc.
My vanos is stripped and the seal change is now a doddle to do, but changing the rattle ring, which causes most of the "vanos noise" is another matter. The nut on the vanos piston that holds the rattle ring in is an M18 socket head but is very shallow at around 2.5mm and hard to get good purchase on. I'll do it though, just got to rethink it as the piston is aluminium and very easy to distort if held too tight in a vice.

I'm all flued up the minute and I should have had it sorted by now but I've been laid low for a couple of days/

think you only need the Vanos tool for the single vanos mate

Would a soft jawed vice work Garry, or even some pieces of wood to grip the piston. Possibly a Jubilee clip packed with e something around the piston maybe?

Tony.

Be careful that you don't do what the guy in the video did.

Don't damage the piston when you cut the old TEFLON seal out. If you do, clean the burrs with a very gentle strokes with a fine file.

I tried to grip it between the jaws of my workmate, using some thin wood as vice grips but it wont hold tight enough. I have got a good engineers vice but I had to take it off my work bench so that I could store my hard top on the bench. If I feel a bit better today I'll go out later and have another go. I'll fix the vice to the workmate and try again.

Not a hard job for the mechanically minded, but if I did it again I would buy a secondhand unit from flea bay to refurbish at your leisure and then fit that. You can pick one up from £35.

not too long ago I needed to change the rocker cover gasket as there was a small leak after 165,000 Klm. While I had that off I decided to replace the double vanos seals on my 3.0i. I watched about 4 vids to make sure I was comfortable enough to do it.

Hardest part was that darn left hand thread cover screw thing on the vanos. That was so tight I thought I would break something. BTW, the little screws behind that are really easy to snap and that'e exactly what I did! That added over 1 hour to the job. :( If you accidentally damage the piston with a blade while getting the flat seals out use some very fine sandpaper to smooth it off - easy.

People, it's not really that hard at all but study a few vids and you'll be right. It will take a few hours if you haven't done it before so be prepared.

I've got the kit ready to do mine sometime next year along with the rattle rings as it's a bit noisy.

In the link here to the X8R kit it has the video on how to do the seals as posted above plus a guide for them and the rattle rings, it says hold them in a vice with soft nylon jaws being careful not to damage them.
