I'm going to order my kit this week mate, I believe Mr Vanos brings refurbed kit and does a straight swap, my mechanic will do it for £100 if I supply the kit as I don't fancy it myself, I'm hoping to do the inlet upgrade at the same time but Bimmertune seem to have disappeard and I can't find the throttle body adapter anywhere else. I have the other parts on my watch list but don't want to order them until I have the adapter.Great link there Sean, it's on my to do list, but after watching that x8r video , I can understand why mr vanos charges what he does, there a fair bit off work involved to do the vanos seals, thankyou
Jimmy.
think you only need the Vanos tool for the single vanos mateThe hardest part of doing the vanos seals is removing the vanos housing, plus you need to buy the special cam tool. My car is single vanos and a lot easier to do than the double vanos but you still have to remove the cam covers, injectors, etc etc.
My vanos is stripped and the seal change is now a doddle to do, but changing the rattle ring, which causes most of the "vanos noise" is another matter. The nut on the vanos piston that holds the rattle ring in is an M18 socket head but is very shallow at around 2.5mm and hard to get good purchase on. I'll do it though, just got to rethink it as the piston is aluminium and very easy to distort if held too tight in a vice.
I'm all flued up the minute and I should have had it sorted by now but I've been laid low for a couple of days/
Would a soft jawed vice work Garry, or even some pieces of wood to grip the piston. Possibly a Jubilee clip packed with e something around the piston maybe? The hardest part of doing the vanos seals is removing the vanos housing, plus you need to buy the special cam tool. I tried to grip it between the jaws of my workmate, using some thin wood as vice grips but it wont hold tight enough. I have got a good engineers vice but I had to take it off my work bench so that I could store my hard top on the bench. If I feel a bit better today I'll go out later and have another go. I'll fix the vice to the workmate and try again.Would a soft jawed vice work Garry, or even some pieces of wood to grip the piston.
