Had a day off work today and thought id crack on with a few jobs that needed doing...
Had noticed when on tonys Lincoln meet that the car all of a sudden had started to run cold not massively but not at 12 o clock as a bm does.
I thought maybe a sensor reading wrong but ran it up stood still last night made the correct temp but on touching the throttle or turning on the heater the gauge would drop the heaters also where not the normal hand burningly hot.
Decided it must be a sticking thermostat not fully stuck open but enough.
Brought the stat to find it was not the right one, as my car is on a year of change it came in at £60 not the £10 i'd paid :banghead::banghead:
That said remade the trip to Gsf and got the right part this time its a Mahle part and i think it may be a remade Bmw part as the one fitted to the car was relatively new but it had failed. This ones had a logo ground off although part numbers are still present.
Built her all back up and bleed her through and success gauge perfect and heaters hotter than my kettle at boil!!.
Went out this afternoon to give her a run around to see if she was all ok and to say it was just a stat the ride and feel of the car was loads better maybe as it was running at the correct temp.
Stop for a quick pic as you do.... :)

Second half of the day i spent giving the roof a good clean it wasn't too bad really but water has never beaded on the roof since i've had her so whilst in Gsf saw they had the 2 part Auto Glym kit for only £17 so but the bullet as its been a hot day here and cleaned and proofed her for the winter...
Happy with the results its darkened the hood back off and when wet she beads nicely rather than soaking in....
The end result....

Hi there,
Used the AutoGlym kit on mine, worked OK. Will get round to re-doing it before the normal Welsh weather kicks in again. Not used to all this sunshine.
Seems to have done the job ok it certainly loads better than it was thats for sure :)

Think I didn't do it for long enough with the cleaning part, hard to tell when the green stuff was all gone when the roof is wet. Might try a bit of Milton next time (or a much cheaper version that the local Asda sells). Just need a bit of spare time.

I was lucky in that the roof was clean it was only the odd mark where it folds etc that had a bit of dirt but it looks like it was looked after, i read that milton is suppose to be a good cheap alternative for shifting the green, good luck hope it works well :)

Yes it should do it comes with the sponge etc to help lift it.
If you have local GSF it would be good to try them as on average its £5 cheaper than anywhere else i have seen it advertised

Days like this are great, a nice sense of achievement when you sort things out. :thumbsup:You may find that your cars is a little easier on the go juice now you have sorted the thermostat, the engines do tend to run rich when not properly up to temp.

Its Auto Glym Soft Top Cleaner @Shelly
Although the cars not bad on fuel @Brian H i was thinking the same thing but the temp has only ran out for less than half a tank of fuel , but it may have been causing issue before it revealed itself.
It may be in my head rather than reality but it just felt more together as a car when it was done so its win win fact or fiction :D

Lucky you spotting it so soon, In my early days of Zed ownership, my m44 1.9 was running cool, I did not know about the temp issue until it would not pass an MOT due to failing on emissions. The mechanic pulled the dipstick and smelt the oil, it smelt like petrol! A thermostat change, oil flush and second oil change within a week made a world of difference.

I've had another 2.8 Zed a while ago as well as a few 3 series an E30 and E36.
I know they run a buffered gauge so thought it odd it stopped getting to 12 oclock and it was one minute fine the next not.
I think it had been done before it looked a new part just a cheap pattern part, i had noticed on the odd occasion a few drops of water on the garage floor and under the bonnet there was water marks on the upper hose and the side of the airbox, no idea where it was coming from the water pump is new so think again it is the thermostat housing causing the issue.
Fingers Crossed all good :)

My heater only chuffs really warm air on the last few degrees of the warm selector. Is a semi sticking thermostat common?
