A crisis of conscience

The title sounds a bit melodramatic, but it sort of fits my present mood - I am the proud owner of a 2001 BMW Z3 1.9i. Purchased in February 2002, at 8,000 miles.

One previous owner, and I have had the exclusive pleasure of this fine car for 16 years. It has been a total joy, and the engine still purrs along, after 58,000 very sedate miles. It has mostly been a summer car, and until the last couple of years has not really shown its' age. I have not done more than the minimum to keep it in good condition, (serviced), and to get it through the annual MOT test, hence my crisis of conscience.

Recently it has started to give a couple of potentially small problems, and I now need a bit of advice on how to look for reliable and honest support on bringing it back to some of its' early glory - it is by no means 'over the hill' but I do not wish to enter the slot machine world of Main Agents, to seek out the best way forward.

Anyone with good mechanical/technical knowledge who is willing to reach out, would be greatly appreciated. I live in Derbyshire.

My issues are:

1. ABS light, (yellow) illuminating - brakes are working fine.
2. I did a trip to Norfolk recently - all went well for 80 miles, and then the car began to misfire intermittently, but still ran fine. Not on load, just generally. On the return trip it ran fine again for 80 miles or so, and then the misfire again. On local runs it has not behaved badly since, but no more long journeys since.
3. I have cut corners, and had third party brakes and discs fitted - the car stands in the open all of the year, and they are prone to bad rusting.

Stuart

Hi Stuart and welcome to the forum. You will find many knowledgeable and willing helpers on this forum to assist you with guidance to bring your Z back up to it's former glory, although at 58,000 miles it's just run in.You obviously enjoy your Z3 to have kept it for so long. Others with more knowledge than I will certainly be along shortly to also welcome you. :welcome:

Hi from Mansfield. Plenty of free advice on here. Your car has done half of what a lot have on here so don't worry yourself. Plenty of life in the old dog yet. :)

Welcome to the forum. There are plenty of people on here willing to help with advice and often more practical assistance. If you share details of the problems you are seeing on your Z3 you will get support. Also doing a quick search on the problem is likely to give a lot of useful information. It is rare for somebody to come upwith a truely new problem.
A good way to meet other Z owners and get to know forum members is attending zfest at Shepshed. https://zroadster.org/threads/zedfest-2018-tickets-on-sale.20103/#post-344959

Thank you for the encouragement - you look a bit far away for a meet, a chat, and a 24 hour flight for the pleasure!

I am just 'down the road' in Chesterfield sir, and am as said looking for honest help/guidance and someone to look at it who won't do the usual 'rip-off.'

My issues at present;

That's the meat of it so far.

Regards,

Stuart

For items 1 and 2 sounds like you need to get the codes read. I am sure somebody on the forum in your area will be along to help with that. Most people use third party brake parts without major problems. If discs are pitted now it may be a case of replacing them and looking for ways to protect them from the worst of the winter weather. Even dry stored cars get a coating of rust on the brakes over the winter. Put the car in gear rather than using the handbrake for storage to avoid problems with the separate drum brake system used for the handbrake.

Point 2 sounds like classic camshaft sensor in need of replacement.

Hi and welcome from Surrey, it would be worth investing in a code reader, they are not expensive, about £35 or so from amazon. If you do that, people on here will help with the fault codes. It may also give some clue to the misfire problem. As for brakes, aftermerket brakes are fine but it is worth fitting good quality ones. I use EBC or Brembo. I have actually got EBC discs on the front and Brembo on the back but they are both good quality and don't seem to rust as badly as OEM. :welcome:

Hi to all, and thank you for the welcomes - I had thought about the code reader, but trying to cut out 'the middle man,' (me), is what I am looking to do. I did have a suspicion about the camshaft sensor, but the result of that is that I need to have someone efficient, honest and reliable to do the job!

In the 1970's and through to the 00's I did all of my own mechanical work, but after retirement, the idea of scraping about under the bonnet, and knuckle skin relocation is no longer a feature of life for me. Retirement might bring out the Formula 1 Mechanic in some of us, but I am more Formula Cabernet Sauvignon nowadays!.

Regards,

Stuart

Hi Stuart, I'm just down the road and another member, Dom, is from Chesterfield. As someone else said, Zedfest at Shepshed in August would be a perfect place to meet members.

Cheers,
Ken.
