Just a thought - if the 3.0l is such a sort after and well performing car, why don't a lot of later Z3 owners (namely the 2.8's) just put in a 3.0l and get the same performance?

Almost 40 gee gees more in the 3.0l and 20nm more torque, I would imagine it will pull better right throughout the power band, @pgunter should have a good idea.

I'm not sure it's just the small extra power. The 3.0 is probably now a rarer car than a Z3M. Production numbers were slightly less anyway and I would imagine there are certainly more Ms left than 3.0s. Certainly there are always more Ms for sale.

Yet the 3.0 is not a million miles off the performance of an M (in my head, others will not all agree) albeit without the panache but typically at a 1/3rd of the price.

I want a 3.0 because I see it as special due to the above - and they are to my mind without doubt the best current investment of any model. They are also all generally newer than the Ms if that's a consideration and conceivably less thrashed by original owners.

I don't want a 2.8 as I'm not really a speed freak.

To answer your question about dropping in a 3.0 to a 2.8. Too much hassle. The 3.0 is a later evolution. Of the 2.8 so it's not a straightforward drop in either.

The M is only half a second quicker 0-60

@Sean d my car was once sold by that dealer in Holsworthy, as it's down as one of the previous owners. They sell loads of Z3's and are Z3 specialists

It is a lovely car, I'd seen it on eBay earlier. The thought of an auto in a Z3 doesn't quite do it for me somehow. There's a cheap auto on the trader too but it just doesn't float my boat.

Nothing wrong with a 3.0 auto, you get the best of both worlds with that box. :)
I prefer manual Mike but I think I will have no choice soon as the wife is taking her test in an auto

There are several different names for the later type of auto, BMW call it Tiptronic but I think it is the same thing.
