Hi All

I'm after a 3.0l gear box as mine has a knocking when changing from 1st to 2nd gear. I have had it checked (by my trusted garage) and I have 3 choices. Leave it (cant do that, its flipping irritating :inpain:) have a rebuild (blimmin expensive :() or get a second hand one

So, does anyone have one that I can buy ?

I have been looking around but I have heard the 3.0l are quite rare ?

Many thanks in advance

Are you sure its the box lots of zeds have a knock from first to second and the diff mount is usually the cause along with possible diff back lash ?

Thanks for your reply. Its what I have been told...and I do trust my garage as they deal with my other cars. Can I ask what you mean by the diff mount ?
When I drive it (and my other half who is into card aswell) you can literally feel the knock when changing gears. Maybe we need to drive another Zed ? it doesn't feel right at all and I have never felt it on any of my other cars.
Thanks again :)

I agree with Ant here, the bigger engine zeds all suffer with backlash in the diff. This is an audible and can be felt in the seat when changing in the lower gears.

The diff bush is pictured here....

I have a poly bush fitted but the standard one can wear it has holes either side and the centre can tear out over time.
If you slip the clutch between the gears can you remove it and is it just 1st-2nd?
If its worn it clunks as it takes up torque so happens in quick exuberant changes but can be driven out.
Worth checking mine was terrible but its not present any more.

My other half is on here too as he's better at this stuff than me..I just want this sorted so I can enjoy Zed more. He understands this better than me, but I love learning so thank you for your help :)

Yup, my 2.8 had a really obvious knock 1st to 2nd and both the 1.9 and 2.2 had a knock, but not nearly as bad. The 2.8 had only done 32 k as well, but when I looked on the net many Z3 owners had the same issue with low mileage cars . So not just down to normal wear.

Just in case it's the box, does a 2.8 box fit as I remember @Lee swap to a 3.0 and don't recall a box swap

I get that you trust your local garage and it's great that you do, however I have yet to find the man who knows everything. You would be best served by letting people who have experience on these particular cars have a look/road test for you.
Only last year a member on here was told that her car needed a new Diff. as her's was very noisy due to the bearings being worn. One new rear wheel bearing later and the Diff. was healed.

One more point to consider is the Flexible "Guibo" rubber coupling on the rear end of the gearbox, which connects to the front end of the "Prop. shaft". There is a right and a wrong way of fitting these (worth checking) which is explained by a YouTube video.

All the gearboxes have the same stud pattern so you could use either box ( only two types ) one is the ZF which is Beefier and getrag which is quite a bit thinner. 2.8-3.0 got the ZF all others got Getrag. Ones more heavy built than the other.

I wouldn’t go down this route yet though as our gearboxes very rarely go wrong like that. It’s likely the fault lies the other end.

thanks Tony, I do agree, the best advice is from those who drive these. Hopefully I will be buying a second hand gear box, just waiting to hear back from the seller

re the Utube vid...we looked at this and asked the garage to check this out...sadly it wasn't this :( would have been easier if it was

Would the person who checked it be aware that there is a right and a wrong way yo fit this coupling though?
If they simply checked that it wasn't splitting and the bolts were secure it may not have been enough.
I retired from the motor trade last year after 45 years and cannot ever recall coming across a BMW with a gearbox fault. It would be very bad luck to see yours being bad.
