Can't make my mind up as to whether you ought to put the first key in the safe now in order not to lose it, but then it might end up like the second one :))
Suggest you buy two new batteries!!! :-s
I think there is a thread on either here or .net about changing or charging the battery!!
I'll try and find it for you. :-bd

Apparently keys should be rotated to keep the battery charged. Turn ignition on then off. Hold down unlock on key whilst pressing lock three times. If that doesn't work then it's probably the key battery or something else. Flat battery in the key will not work the locks/roof/windows.
The only way to charge the battery is to use it as the ignition key on a long journey or take it to BMW and they will charge it in one of their key chargers. Apparently the key may need re-initialising which the dealer can sort in just a couple of minutes.

the only way you can change the battery is to cut it with a knife then you have to resolder the pos and neg parts thay are not made to be replaced

I don't know if they are similar remote keys but one of our keys for the Z3 didn't work so I had a chat to our local BMW dealers, Sytner and they reinitialised the spare key while I waited and no charge.
Might be worth a visit if not to far away.
