26 year old spare tyre replacement

Look at it this way: it's old, may crack or have age-related wear. You get a flat tyre, you go for the spare and within a mile or two it goes down too as it's now being stressed in ways it never has been before. I'd replace it for peace of mind.

hey everyone i read all your threads and if you seriously want a mobile tyre replacement i have a suggestion i used this company a couple of times and if you want to use them its upto you. Read their google and trustpilot reviews first. here is the website to contact https://tyremates.co.uk/

That's pretty cool, we have a few of those in my area as well (Phoenix, Arizona)
According to Google, they have a base fee of about $50 to $100 above and beyond the basic services available at the multitude of tire dealers and outlets.
Nice to know I can have that service at home or on the road.

I bought my Z3 from my mom after my father passed away. It was 2017 and the Z (2001 model year) and 4600 miles on it and, of course, the original tires. I was talking to a good friend of mine who worked in a tire store for decades and he suggested I replace the tires due to age. As noted above, he said they break down over time. Mine didn't look bad with casual observation and the car had been driven only in good weather and stored indoors in a climate controlled environment for all if it's life.

When I took it in to replace the tires, the folks who did the labor (not the same place where my friend worked), said it was good that I was replacing. Apparently they had man hairline cracks on the sidewalls.

Now, about spares. I've never given spare tire thought for my Z nor have I ever noticed one. Is there a spare somewhere in trunk (boot) that I've somehow missed?

OK, I just watched a video. I'll have to look at mine. I spent time under the car installing a Magnaflow cat back exhaust upgrade....never noticed anything resembling a tire under there.

FWIW, I just flat out REMOVED the spare tire carrier tray and spare tire this year, and I will probably remove the metal tray carrier later. It was the original tire and I really didn't trust it for actually working as intended for the past 10 years, and I always carried around: a battery powered air compressor, two types of tire plugs. and a AAA road service card. I was getting tired of removing and replacing the spare tire tray before and after every autox this year - that was the final straw.

My thinking is, if I get a flat tire or come back to my car and a tire is flat, I'll inflate it and see how quickly is loses air and if I can easily drive to the nearest tire repair shop I'll do that, OR if I can see an obvious nail or hole that I can repair on the spot to get to a tire replace place I'll do that, and if all else fails, AAA will flatbed my car to a tire shop. Honestly, because the flat full size tire won't fit in the trunk anyway once I mount the spare, I was unlikely to use the spare anyway.

And before you say how insane this all is, remember that the M Coupe and M Roadster didn't have spare tires at all, and came with an electric tire inflator, a can of fix-a-flat, and toll free number for roadservice from BMW.

Makes alot of sense unless youve a fresh spacesaver which i ain't.
Ill think hard about removing the spare wheel, there's alot of modern options since 2001 to get you out of trouble.
Id like to keep the tray and holder as it's part of the car...I wonder what i could bung in the tyres place ??..

I thought about keeping the empty tray too, but...it doesn't cinch down firmly without the tire. Without the tire, the tray rattles around. So I ditched the whole thing.
