the gasket for the oil filter housing is about £3, and not too difficult to change, that would have saved the engine.

Sterling grey is now my second favourite Z3 colour, after Boston green of course.

The nearside engine mount was soaked in oil resulting in it coming apart.

Could well be that the mount came apart and leaked the oil it is filled with? Obviously adding to what was leaking from the filter housing gasket too.

I don't think I could get an engine in and out without taking the gearbox off - which is exactly what I did with my engine swap. Or without taking the front panel off - which is also what I did.

I'd end up swearing rather a lot when I couldn't line up the gearbox shaft. And I'm not sure I'd fancy dropping the engine at that angle.

I take it it's not the first time you've done that?

Yes mate they do, I think @Brian H had one leak on his 3.0 a couple of years ago. Also I recently discovered that the front lower arm rear bushes on a Z4 do too, I got an eyeful removing one on my car!
