F1 2019 and beyond

I have followed F1since I was about 6 years old, 1951 or so ( hard to do when you grew up then in the US). I always loved the variety of cars, drivers, and teams through the years, and the innovations and technological advances that occurred, from people like Chapman, Vandervell, Parnell, and teams from Ferrari, Alfa, Mercedes, Maserati, BRM, Talbot, Cooper, later Brabham, Williams, Renault, Honda, etc. Since the 90s, though, it seems to have become so expensive that only factory teams can survive, and regulations have eliminated variety to the point that, minus team colors and logos, it's nearly impossible to tell a McLaren from a Williams, or a Red Bull from a Mercedes, (except, of course, that it's a Mercedes or a Ferrari winning the race. ). Looking at the regulations for the next 2 years, it seems as though F1 is becoming a spec series, with the FIA presenting a model of what the 2021 cars will look like. It appears the only room designers and engineers will have, to be creative, is in front wing and perhaps suspension design. Whenever a team develops something innovative, and enjoys an advantage, through a loophole or creative interpretation of the rules, it gets banned, even if it doesn't violate those rules. It used to be teams would COPY that piece and incorporate it in their cars. I am finding myself following WSC more than F1, and with the next couple of years looking even less interesting in F1, I will likely continue following sportscar and GT racing.

I dont follow F1 or anything like that but....

Isn’ t that like whats happened to cars generally....back in the fifties/ sixties / seventies cars were designed by people that had a pencil and paper........now with computer design, which are looking for best economy, design, and aerodynamics etc, they have all morphed into virtually the same shape etc. Thats why cars now are fairly boring bits of tin and plastic.

If they want to see how good the drivers are, put them all in standard Skoda Fabias and let them race them =))

I think the 2021 regulation could, if applied properly, bring teams closer together. Other teams may come into F1 as it'll be less expensive to. 15 years ago the front runners were 7 seconds a lap faster, this is not the case today, much closer. The overtaking is the primary issue hence DRS, that's just a plaster masking the aerodynamic issue though, resolve that and we have more overtaking and thus better racing. The lesser Formulas are all about drivers, F1 is about the whole package, power, speed, aero, driver etc etc.

My favourite sport, a quality season and yet again the best driver wins in not the best car over the season, Ferrari dropped the ball, again.

Don’t know if you can get to see the BTCC (British Touring Car Championship) over there Tom, but if you can have a look. Best proper close racing anywhere, better than DTM in my opinion.

Speedchannel used to carry btcc and dtm at one time. Great stuff! We don't have cable since we moved, so I guess I need to find a source for a whole season of race videos from btcc. I liked the series a lot.

I think, and have thought for the past 5 years, that Mercedes has been the best or equal best car on the grid...overall. Ferrari might have been quicker on the straights, but were dog slow in corners or at tight circuits. I also believe Merceded keep enough in reserve to tap into whenever Ferrari or Red Bull appear to have caught or surpassed them. I'm not a Hamilton fan, but I do think he's the top driver of his era, and that hasn't hurt Mercedes, either.
