I have followed F1since I was about 6 years old, 1951 or so ( hard to do when you grew up then in the US). I always loved the variety of cars, drivers, and teams through the years, and the innovations and technological advances that occurred, from people like Chapman, Vandervell, Parnell, and teams from Ferrari, Alfa, Mercedes, Maserati, BRM, Talbot, Cooper, later Brabham, Williams, Renault, Honda, etc. Since the 90s, though, it seems to have become so expensive that only factory teams can survive, and regulations have eliminated variety to the point that, minus team colors and logos, it's nearly impossible to tell a McLaren from a Williams, or a Red Bull from a Mercedes, (except, of course, that it's a Mercedes or a Ferrari winning the race. ). Looking at the regulations for the next 2 years, it seems as though F1 is becoming a spec series, with the FIA presenting a model of what the 2021 cars will look like. It appears the only room designers and engineers will have, to be creative, is in front wing and perhaps suspension design. Whenever a team develops something innovative, and enjoys an advantage, through a loophole or creative interpretation of the rules, it gets banned, even if it doesn't violate those rules. It used to be teams would COPY that piece and incorporate it in their cars. I am finding myself following WSC more than F1, and with the next couple of years looking even less interesting in F1, I will likely continue following sportscar and GT racing.
