2001 Bmw Z3-
I want to charge the battery because it’s weak. I heard that in order to do a deep charge, it’s recommended to unhook the battery from the car.
1. Is that true?
2. And if I unhook it, what will I lose in the process that I’ll need to reset?

The only thing you'll need is radio code. Though TBH if your battery has got to the point that it needs charging, it's time for a replacement.
I recommend the Bosch ones they sell in Costco - bought one for mine recently for about £65 IIRC.
Replaced the previous Bosch one which was nearly 10 years old which is testament to how good those units are.

Hi Tonytony
I don't have an answer to your first question, but for the second one I had the battery disconnected in mine all winter for charging and when I reconnected it last month all I had to do was reset the clock. I've an aftermarket stereo which was unaffected but you might need to make sure you have the code if you have an original one.

Thank you guys for your replies! Good to know the only thing that’s needed is the radio code!

On a slightly different note, I have 130k-do you guys think it makes some sense to change the transmission fluid and the filter? Although BMW claims transmission is for life.

Life is about 100K miles, it is a good idea to change then.

Did you change yours at around 100k? If you did, any significance in change? Thx.

Yes I did change mine, I didn't notice any difference but the idea is to protect the box by having good oil in it. No oil goes on for ever without degrading.

It is an automatic... I was told that Dex VI. (dextron 6) is what the auto. takes. The dealer and napa agreed, but much internet advice is Dex III.

Dexron II is fine on 4 cylinder cars with the 4 speed GM automatic. Dexron is a GM developed oil and it's so cheap you can do two or three changes in quick succession to do a full oil change.

5 speeds require a synthetic oil. Search for MV LT71141 fully synthetic ATF 5 Litre on Ebay.
