I missed this one:

1999 BMW Z3 ROADSTER 1.9

Didn't meet reserve, which I think might have been a tad too high.

The pros:
  • Low mileage
  • Hardtop
  • Loads of extras
  • Not too many owners
The cons:
  • A bit of rust around the sills
  • I would say sale prompted by high expenses trying to maintain the car (not stated)
  • MOT advisories fine if you can do the work yourself
  • Soft top in need of some TLC (and money)
  • Just a 1.9 like mine
It got to £4,100.00, which I think is a pretty good price for a 1.9, but didn't sell. I would argue that the reserve was set too high, or am I wrong?

Given the hardtop and fitting kit, the car has low mileage and aircon (essential in my view), 4.5K is a good price IMO.
Really? I paid £2,500 for my 1.9, then spent £1000 on a hardtop, £600 on a new soft top, plus ~£500 in parts to get the car up to standard, which I don't believe I will ever be getting back. If I got £4.100 for it now I would count myself lucky. My car has got around 20k miles more, granted, but 4.5k would be a ludicrous amount to ask for, even at the mileage this car supposedly has.

We have a 2.8 going for £3950 + plus £850 for the hardtop on this forum, so are you sure £4,500 is a decent price for a 1.9?

The market is definitely softening again and let's be honest it's never been that strong for the 1.9 but low mileage examples are getting harder to find as these cars hit 25 years old. In addition you only need to view a few to realise the vast difference in condition and for some that can be a daunting process which they are happy to bring to a conclusion by paying the right money for a good example. I guess the final point is that the 1.9's for us that know these cars will always be where the value is - as good as the six cylinders sound unless your running up and down the motorway they simply don't do the b-road stuff better than the 4 cylinder. Good luck in your search yo buy another one as good as the one sounds that you already have - this looked like a good one that just finished in ebay but like the example you highlighted I guess the sellers expectation wasn't aligned to the current market. Still it always makes me laugh seeing the money people can spend on a car without realising what value they could get from buying a Zed
