My Z3 was always treated with care by the previous owner. It doesn't leak or burn any oil. What items would you change at 85,000 miles. I'm thinking a brake job but what else while Ive got the wheels off?
Thanks, John Kuhn

It all depends what renewal work has previously been tackled. And also what you are aware of.

At that sort of mileage spark plugs and gearbox & diff oil might be on the agenda.

But you wouldn't really go in and change anything around the wheel without specific assessment.

:welcome:to the forum from West Cumbria, England. As said above, depends on your history as to what's been done previously. Some or none if these may need doing?
1. Diff oil
2. Gear box oil
3. Shocks & Springs & top mounts
4. Water pump and other cooling parts
5. Seat bushes if they rock back and forwards
6. Diff bush
7. Various suspension bushes
8. Rear handbrake shoes
9. Handbrake cables
10. Bonnet (hood) cable
11. Spare wheel & tyre

You could be in luck as they may all already have been done, worth a check though.

Hi, welcome from Mansfield, UK.

Any pics?

Worth going over the history to see what was replaced and when.

If you were in the UK I'd be suggesting you take the sill covers and wheel arch liners off to check for rust. That's where it happens on a Z3. But I guess depending on where you are in the States you may live in a very different climate.

Hi John and welcome from me near
Lincoln UK. Do you live in an area where they use salt in the roads and will the car have been subjected to salted roads? If so outer sill removal a good idea as is a usual thing over here to check for corrosion. In general a thorough mechanical inspection should highlight any work that may need doing and in what order. Good luck and enjoy your Z journey.

Tony.

Hi Welcome from Hertfordshire, anything rubber might need a look at, especially under the hood/bonnet air intake PCV valve piping.

Hello and welcome. @Andy McDonnell has given a fairly comprehensive list of items to check.
I would suggest that you also check the belt that drive the water pump and the aux belt that drives the air con. Any small cracks visiblle between the grooves means they should be on the list to change soon. Consider also the flexible brake hoses, 2 up front and 4 at the rear, these can deteriorate and replacing with braiided stainless lines can result in more positive braking.
Rubber components in general will be showing their age. The air intake pipes, between air filter and manifold ofren develop small cracks and splits which mean the MAF does not function properly and can cause fuel/air mix ratio to be upset.
Last one from me is to check your trunk floor spot welds, where the diff bracket is welded. These can fail and need to be fixed to avoid major damage. Generally this is a problem where the car has ben driven with a heavy right foot, but it is worth checking even if the car has a history of gentle driving.
Enjoy driving your car and the maintenance that coms with owning a car of this age.
