I bought this to break but I can't bring myself to chop it up. It looks terrible but under the dust is an 82,000 mile 1.9 with a stamped service book, invoices and every MOT from 2001. Two keys, book pack and a surprising lack of ferrous oxide.

It's a Cat S write off having been hit good and hard on the passenger door, It's b******* the sill and dented the rear wing - I'm 99% sure that will save. I was told the B pillar had gone but it's perfect.

A brief drive reveals a very crisp engine and box, nice clutch and brakes. Mechanically it seems very good. The interior is really nice with the M steering wheel and Business Cd player (that I might sell).

So, it's likely going to be a project in Classics Monthly magazine. I'm collecting some good used panels tomorrow and make a start on it.

I'll paint the door, sill and rear wing: there are too many slightly different shades of Boston green plus 20 years of resprays etc.

So, a door, two sills and a mirror for £120 later. I trial fitted everything to make sure the door gaps were okay before unbolting it again. The rear wing has been removed, panel beaten straight and only needed the lightest skim of filler. The sills were surface rusty but have cleaned up well and are painted in the proper anti stone chip paint halfway up as per original. I'm hoping to get the panels painted this week and then back on the car before a quick check over an an MOT.

The rear window is split so the jury's out on a new screen sewn in or a good used hood complete.

No, proper job, clear over base. Both wings, door and both sills using some test cards to get the colour right.

I started by hanging the door on, then the sill, both wings and all reassembly. Three hours in total.

Standard Boston green paint code 275/6 and test cards painted/adjusted until they matched the front wing.

Last night it went to its new owner who is renowned for looking after stuff - so a good save all in all.
