Hi and welcome from me in South Yorkshire. The easiest way to find the fault would be to code read it.
They aren't expensive and can be brought for less than you pay a garage.
It may be a cam sensor but a read is the only real way to know.
Where are you there may be a member close that can help

Welcome,

As said code reader is a good starting place. Have you done any checks already, like leaks in the air intake system or loose spark plugs, leads etc. How longs it been doing it?

Welcome from Leicestershire

I agree with @Antm72, I had a similar issue a few months ago with my project car and it was due to a massive air leak as after replacing the cam sensor the manifold hadn't been seated correctly.

Excuse the different array of colours splattered everywhere and the air hose next to the Maf was disconnected just for testing purposes.

Welcome from Derbyshire. As said above use a code reader and check all air intake pipes for splits and perishing

Hi @Mick Stoneman,:welcome: to the forum from me too in Staffordshire . As said above get the codes read first, it will save time and money rather than guessing what the problem is;). Good luck.:)

I had a similar problem and it ended up being a cam shaft inlet valve sensor that fixed it immediately, It was diagnosed through a code reader like others have suggested.

Good luck - often its simple things and from experience the engines are pretty bullet proof........
