1997 Z3 Roadster 2.8 Crank no Start

Bought a 97 Z3 2.8 manual the other day and have been trying to get it start up. Still new to working on cars but my buddy who is helping me out is very experienced, hes had his fun on e36s, e39s, ect. However motor cranks but does not want to start. Fuel pump only engages when the relay is jumped. Went ahead and replaced a crank sensor as well. The car is also not getting a spark, we tested it yesterday. Well anyways, the people we bought it from apparently had the DME reprogrammed but my friend does not think thats the case, he wants to try to put a new DME in and Im trying to find out if the DME and EWS systems are interchangeable and if its required to get the dealership to reprogram this kind of thing.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!
