OK...any ideas? I picked up this low mileage '96 Z3, which is in very nice condition, but will not start. At first the engine would not crank, but I jumped the EWS2 anti theft module, and the car cranks. I'm getting no spark. The previous owner stored it in a barn for about 5 years, but was started regularly. However, about a year ago it wouldn't start. He had been trying for the past year to sell me this car, but I was hesitant. I get involved in many projects. So...I've tried a new crank position sensor, new cam sensor, new key ring trans / receiver, invested in an Autel diagnostic scanner, but still get no spark. I'm reading error 000148 on the scanner, but the explanation isn't clear. I really have a feeling this is lack of communication from the anti theft module to the ECU, but I hate to add a new ECU to the list. At this rate, I should have just walked away and bought a new one. Please offer any input. I've pretty much exhausted my ideas. Thanks.

Suggest you set up INPA to read the trouble codes in the DME and the EWS and report back with the code number and description.
Get INPA here: https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/...tions-Experiences-Discussions-Experimentation

There is a rolling code that the EWS sends the DME to release the drive away protection. Drive away protection stops the spark, fuel pump and injection. INPA has a procedure to rest this rolling code. There will be codes if this is your problem.

Have a look in the battery box. Make sure that all wires to the positive terminal are connected.

Thanks for this info. Do you know if it's possible that the keys somehow lost communication with the anti theft module? According to the previous owner, the car ran fine, and he had been starting it regularly.
