Hi,

Just joined this group. Just purchased another Z3 1900 for my son and I to make roadworthy and enjoy. Got it as a non runner, turns over but no spark and no fuel. I have powered up the pump and it works. Just one key with no buttons on it and it has a chip inside it. Has compression and was used a year ago, parked up, left and now non start. Fresh fuel added too. Any ideas folks pls.? thanks in advance.

Sounds like an immobiliser problem. Is the battery fully charged?

Hi Tony,

Thanks for responding. Yes fully charged. I have powered up the fuel pump in the tank so I know that works...just doesn't by key. Would it be what's called the DME unit? As I say, no spark nore fuel..

Cheers
Mark

Could be. Try removing battery leads from battery and touch them together for a few seconds. Replace on battery and try again.

Hi Tony,

Did as advised, and a couple of times...to no avail sadly. Shall we purchase a code reader adaptor to fit a solus? I can get my hands on one. Unless you have any other tips.

Many thanks

Could be that the EWS has lost its sync with the DME, this can be reset with some of the scanners out there, I can confirm that BMW Scanner 1.4 on a Laptop can do it. Not sure a Creator 310+ can without plugging mine in and taking a look through the menus. Higher end Tablet scanners like Autel and Launch can do it. BMW INPA should also be able to do it. You will of course need a 20pin to 16pin OBD2 cable changer to plug scanners into the underbonnet diagnostic socket.

Hi,

Plugged a Solus in using adaptor. Solus says no power...any ideas? Stupid question, there is not 16 or 20 pins in the cars obd.

20 pin round diagnostic socket in engine bay called a pac-man socket due to the shape of the centre post. Not all pins will be populated but your 20pin to 16 pin cable changer will connect to your scanner and will pick up power from one of the pins. If your car also has a 16pin OBD2 socket under the steering wheel that will only read engine and transmission data. The round 20 pin socket will read all modules fitted to the car.

Quite often the socket under the bonnet has never been used and it is hard to get a contact. I've had several Z3s with this issue and had to use electrical terminal cleaner spray to make it work. The other connector is right at the outer end of the dash lower panel and is covered by a plastic cover.

An alternative is to send the ECU to a guy called Enda Ward (EndTuning) and just have the EWS immobiliser removed.

Hi to those who responded to my request for help. Attached pic showes a bad connection, as a result not sending power to the DME. Now sorted and looks like a new crank sensor is needed. We have fuel...just no signal to the ignition. Nearly there but hope this may help others if ever a similar issue arrives.
