By default the system allows you to like a post just like Facebook. We are running an extension which extends the ability to give more reason behind the "like" and to allow negative, neutral or positive ratings on a post. We have 6 ratings, but some other forums run as many at 10-15, which I think is overkill.
Also I've set all the ratings to be positive, as it's not always negative to disagree/dislike a post. People honestly take that little button being clicked on to heart, and we've had a few incidents when fat fingers have hit the wrong button and people have taken exception.
It is however a good indication of how well you are perceived on the forum, so to get any at all is a good thing. To get a lot suggests you have said some wise and wonderful things. So enjoy your 1000 likes trophy Frankie, you've earned it.
