Code reader is a must, suggest you get a good one, as its a 1996 I would suggest trying BMW INPA on a laptop, not sure a handheld Creator 310+ will read an early car the diagnostics changed around 1998/9 when the facelift models started. Sounds like your thermostat is stuck open if its not warming up and temmp guage is low. Air leaks across the engine can also cause running problems split or holes in any rubber hoses and intake bellows must be replaced. Code reader will show up faults with other sensors by setting codes which will point you in the right direction for fixes. Where are you, put your location in your user details or signature, you may have someone close with diagnostics to help you.

Start looking at the intake rubber boot from Maf to the intake then all rubber and plastic hoses across the engine that are the vaccum pipes, replace any that are split or got holes in them. The cooling issue you have will be a separate issue, thermostat stuck open sounds likely, replacement thermostat is the option here. Don't forget to post where you are help maybe close by. What engine do you have either M44 or M43?
