Ouch - that's awkward to get at. When i changed my hoses I took the air inlet system off to access connectors - I'll try and find procedure
Your connector is on this diagram http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=CH72-EUR---Z3-BMW-Z3 1.9&diagId=11_1558
Your hoses are on this http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=CH72-EUR---Z3-BMW-Z3 1.9&diagId=11_1567

hi, thanks for your time, i dont think my connector is on that diagram, my connector is more of a Y shape with one big hose and a small one.

having studied, i think your hose diagram is correct, mine is part number 12, [the only one without a part number on the list]?

Sorry presumed you had the M44 engine same as mine. Part 12 is greyed out as it is not fitted on that model. If you go to select another car option at top of page and then enter last 7 characters of you VIN - you should get what is fitted on your model.

confused now, just checked my vin and it is m44 engine, do you not have 2 hoses coming off your connector at the back of the engine, the biggest one going into the bulkhead/dash for the heater? found another m44 pic with the y connector shown clearly with part 12 going to it.

As @jonco says put the last 7 digits of the vin number into realoem and you can access all parts. As yours is a 1997 could be a M43 1.8 or M44 1.9 engine M43 is single cam and M44 is double cam.

M43 parts are http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=CJ11-EUR-09-1997-Z3-BMW-Z3_18&diagId=11_1393
8.9.and 10
hoses could be
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=CJ11-EUR-09-1997-Z3-BMW-Z3_18&diagId=11_6180
and

hi, just typed my vin in there and its m44...if hose number 12 is not used for m44, what do other owners have going into the y shape connector?

I'll have to have a look at the back of my engine to check but the confusion may be the 'cold climate option' i.e hose 11 .
It appears that one of the hoses off the Y piece is hose 11 which is the `jacketing heater' for the gases from the rocker cover. It is designed to stop gases condensing and freezing in cold climates - well that is my understanding ;)

this is all new to me, having just got the car, but to add to a bit more confusion part 1 from your hose link looks nothing like the shape and size of my one. [you can see the hose in my original pic at the begining of this post] will have to disconnect mine from the dash bulkhead end and see if theres any detailed pics of the part numbers to compare . the hose is hanging loose now anyway until i get the new connector part.
