Hi all…I’m again doing my head in and going around in circles regarding oil choice!
I’ve managed to sort the manual gearbox oil..after firmly believing no manual gearbox would be happy with atf!! Lol
I’m now trying to source fear axle oil..and have come up against of it has limited slip diff or not?
I’ve searched threads on here, but can’t seem to get a definitive answer for the 1.9 (mines 98 on R reg)
I’ve come to the conclusion that no it doesn’t, as it has asc instead…but I thought I’d ask on here before I go scrabbling underneath, spinning wheels etc
Thanks

Think Andy was suggesting having ASC doesn’t necessarily preclude having an LSD

To best of my knowledge, the LSD was only available on six cylinder cars. As an option from around 1998 and then standard on all six pot facelifts

Thanks for the reply! Yeah I didn’t mean anything by it…things sound different in text form..I appreciate all responses! I think the best course of action is to jack the back up and see the wheel rotation..many thanks

Haha, all good mate. Similarly, I wasn't suggesting anything but on reading back can see how it may come across that way:whistle:

For what it's worth, I don't think your 1.9 has the LSD. You could go on a VIN decoder site (e.g. bimmer.work : VIN Decoder for BMW) put your VIN in and it should tell you definitively. When I've used them before, my 25% locking differential comes up as one of the options fitted (even though the LSD was standard on six pots by then)

I also understand the opposite turning wheels test doesn't work with Torsen diffs, i.e. the type fitted to Z3s, due to how Torsens operate compared to plate differentials

Lol…this car is fighting me all the way…only trying to give it some love!
I will give that site a go..although I tried one recommended, and it told me nought🤨
Would you reckon the bmw supplying dealer would be much help?
Cheers danny

It reckon it can’t hurt to ask the supplying dealer, they might even appreciate an update on the car

Re: diff oil, added complication in that I’m not even sure if Torsens need specific LSD oil or if normal diff oil would suffice. Currently got two bottles of Castrol LSD oil at home, wondering what to do with them haha

As far as I know ( but don't quote me on it) Only 6cyl models had an lsd never seen one on an m44,m43 4 pot

Asc is the earlier version of the traction control later zeds and all newer bmw models right up to current year use Dsc.

I have done both my diff oils on both zeds from memory I think it was a 75/90 gear oil that goes in it would need to check my invoices but at work just now.
Stephen.

According to the 1995 options list for the 1.8 (M43) and 1.9 (M44), a "Limited slip differential with 25% locking action" was available for both cars. ABS was standard but ASC not listed as standard or option.
My April 1997 M44 build has neither ASC or LS differential - it's up to the driver to keep the car out of a hedge!! :)

Well a little update! I’ve just spoken to the supplying dealer what was TICE of Dorchester, and they are going to try and sort a build sheet out for me!

Apparently all the sites require full Vin. Numbers now because they are having to re use some older ones.

You are very unlikely to find an LSD on a 1.8, 1.9, 2.,0 or 2.2. They almost all had ASC traction control and an LSD was never on the UK options list upon launch here in 1996. DSC was fitted from around late 2000 on the 3.0i and as an option on the others that had ASC+T as standard. The 2.8 always had an LSD; very early ones had a traditional plate type LSD with 25% lock up and these are the ones where if you turn one rear wheel, the other ones turns in the same direction. These need special LSD oil. Later ones used the TorSen torque sensing LSD that behaves like a standard diff - turn one rear wheel and the other one counter rotates. They only lock up when one wheel loses traction. These were also fitted to the 3.0.

A 1.9 Z3 needs plain old 75W/90 oil in the diff.

Thanks for straightening that one out Andy, always good to know there’s some good help out there!👍
