Hi guys,

I read in the owner's manual that my 2.0 (automatic) from 2000 should do 0-100 in 9.9 seconds, so I gave it a try this morning. The app I used was Torque on a Samsung S4
First try 0-100kph 11.5sec

Then I switched over to sport mode, and I can't believe it:
Second try 0-100kph 12.7sec, it took even longer on sport mode! Should I be worried? The Z only has 70K on it, drives for the rest quite well.

Did somebody gave it a go as well?

I would not worry too much, figures in the book are well.........sometimes optimistic, I mean they are achievable in a laboratory under perfect conditions etc. do a few runs and take an average, this will give you more of an idea of what your car can do.

As said i think a tad optermistic probably taken on rollers so no wind drag etc lots of factors .
Have a a dabble with my 2.8 it should be 6.2 0-60 and manage a 6.9 so not bad really the times can vary you have to make sure the phone is ridgedly held in place or the ecclerometer is fudged.

The time doesn't matter as its all relative ;)

Its the fun factor that's the important bit :D

Always dubious of phone based apps for measuring speeds etc. Not always the most reliable :)

I think your right although the positioning for speed is only calculated by the app i used when it detects 12+ satellites.
The app can be set to detect motion sensativitive you can set rolling start speeds end speeds 0-60 times 1/4mile times it does heads up display to mirror to a windscreen it quite a tool for a free app it calculates speed to the same presicion as my sat nav.
I suppose the phones hardware is the achilles heal as said its a good indicator but may not be 100% precise.
If your a budding Santa pod enthusiast its a good tool to help you refine a skill.

Standing start figures requires techniques you may not be happy to try. They may have held it on the brake with the revs as high as it will go before letting off the brake pedal.

On these old auto's a gearbox fluid changes seems to do wonders.

My 17 year old son laughs at me saying that his 1988 Corolla ke70 wagon kan do it in 13.5 seconds according to the owner's manual. I told him that I can take my top down and he can't

Anyway, I found a post somewhere that it took a dude 20 seconds with his Corolla ke70, that will learn him..

Best way to get a real time and kph is put it on a regulation drag strip and give it a go! As @Dino D says there are techniques you may not want to try! Enjoy the zed and be thankful you aren't in the corolla full time!! lol. JIM

These Apps are quite unreliable when you're measuring over short times and distances. The GPS quite often calculates only once or at best a few times a second. From standstill they use the accelerometer to detect the start of the roll because you may have gone some distance before the GPS detects a change. The GPS has an accuracy of at best +/- 10m. The devices in phones are small and insensitive. The overall effect is that any measurements you get are likely to read high.
Also, car manufacturers do all kinds of things to get good times (and mpg). They are allowed to take mirrors off, empty tank etc.
The only way to measure power at the wheels is to use a dyno. I wouldn't worry that you've lost many horses.
To get an accurate measure use a stop watch and measured distance.

To get the best 0-60mph/0-100kph on an automatic you need to give it a bit of abuse.
Put the transmission in D.
Hold it on the brakes and floor the throttle. Wait for the revs to stabilize applying maximum loading on the torque converter.
Then release the brakes.
Hopefully the transmission should stay in it's casings (and not blow apart) while the car achieves its' claimed acceleration times.....

And that's in a "filled for life" gearbox. It certainly did improve my 2.0 Auto without doubt., has some effect on a manual too?

Tony.
