Just had the MOT done and turns out the exhaust is too knackered to save!
Local garage who are normally pretty good can only get hold of riduculously expensive ones- £440 for the backbox and £190 for the middle section. They’re happy to fit a second hand one if i can get hold of it so first question is does anyone have one??

Read something about cheap german ones on here, can someone point me in the right direction and offer some advice? My car is a 2.8 widebody pre facelift from 1999

Car has 160k miles and a bit of rust so I’m just after something cheap to keep it running for another year. Be a shame to have to scrap it or sell for parts...

Worst case scenario, any ideas on what kind of price you’d get spares or repairs for it?

Nice picture attached of happier times

Thanks in advance!!

The back-box on mine needed replacing and BMW quoted stupid money for just the part. Ebay sellers? Be careful as the one I dealt with assured me the back-box and middle silencer would fit my car which, incidentally, is exactly the same as yours. When it arrived, it was clearly nothing like the existing system so went back and after a lot of messaging and getting PayPal involved, I received a refund.

I opted for a lifetime guarantee on a back-box and middle silencer made from stainless steel and the garage matches the throaty sound from the original. Fitting and parts, from memory (can check if you need) were about £480.00. Has the twin exhaust pipes.

Yep, that’s my concern with getting one off ebay!
£480 is way more than I’d want to spend as I can see it becoming a money pit from now on.
Any ideas on other sources?

Considering maybe even just selling as spares and repairs now, if anyone would be interested??

I used a company called Tony Banks for a custom exhaust, based in Leeds.

Sounds great and at a good price.

This is on my ‘97 2.8

Only you can decide what your car’s future holds.

Did you get the cill done? Can’t remember if it was the one or both?

Mine was local to me so no hassle of taking a day out plus mileage and cost £450.00 (inc VAT) with a lifetime guarantee. Garage part of a nationwide operation.

@Wazzock

I got my exhaust from a German seller on ebay. It's a cat back system and also fits the 1.9 cars too. It has the single tail pipe and not the twin tail one.
It's a good quality system made by Thyssen-Thrupp and only cost me £130 delivered. It was delivered in less than a week. It has been on for best part of 5years now and my car has never had an issue with emissions.
My car is 1998 single vanos 2.8.

This is like the one I have on my car. Exhaust sound is OEM. There are plenty of sellers selling this system for a lot less but I decided I'd buy from Germany.

Have a look under your car and if you have the single pipe from your cat then this will fit your car. If in doubt, take a photo with your phone and attach it to a message to the seller.

Incidentally, I have 2 zeds both 2.8 prefacelift and when the time comes I am going to fit another one of these systems to either of my cars.
Your decision though.
