After a 13 year break I've decided to rejoin the Z community! I really enjoyed my first car, a Dakar Yellow 1998 2.8 Z3 that I bought in Melbourne and shipped back to the UK (wonder if its still around?), and owned until 2003 . I'm either looking for a 6 cylinder excellent condition car, preferably in Dakar too, or a cheaper car that needs a few jobs doing whilst its driven. The cars seem to have lasted well, is that just an impression, or???

Welcome back!

Yes, the Z3 has aged pretty well at up to 20 years old, heading for classic status in the near future. It's getting harder to find the top/mint condition ones, so I'd budget in for some essential maintenance off the bat!

Good luck in your quest. Gaz

Hello and welcome from Truro. Generally the Z3 has fared pretty well and they are still quite easy to find at decent prices. Dakar's are quite rare though

I think my original Z3 went to the west Country, maybe the only 2.8 in Dakar, as I think I'm learning that they were only sold here with the 1.9, 2.0 2.2 and 3.0 engines. Is that right? Sadly I had my own registration on it, so don't know the new one..

I don't know the answer to that, but there will be people on here that do know. Happy hunting

You could special order Dakar, but yes pretty much the engines you've listed are your likely bets (although I don't recall ever seeing a 2.0 in Dakar). They also made the ///M in Dakar.

A quick peek on Autotrader only lists one Dakar, which is a 2.2i Sport for £6k, or an ///M in Dakar for £20k on eBay. You may find more will emerge for sale early next year. Personally I'm waiting till March till I list my 2.2.

Hello and welcome.

You will need to budget for all the usual items when selecting a zed. Shocks, drop links etc. All the rubber on a 15/20 year old car would probably have started to crack and get hard. Not expensive but well worth the time.

Yes, I've been to see that one. It has sat idle for a long time sadly, anything that could have corroded or tarnished has. All the brightwork has mottled, and green mildew has formed on the roof, seats etc. The brake discs have severly corroded so that there virtually no braking other than a gentle stop. There's the start of rust inside engine compartment, and a dent in rear wing, plus a severe dent on drivers side cill under door where its hit a kerb, along the length of the car. There are a few other niggles, like the door treads, exhaust needing replacement. I made an offer but was refused. Seemed like a near perfect spec for me, but I would say it needs a few thousand spent on it, the above is only what I could casually notice. Shame! What do you think that might be worth?

As for waiting until next year, the spring to sell, there's a school of thought that says that's the worse time to sell! The reasoning is that everyone waits until then, then the market is flooded with choice. Over supply means that prices can well be lower. A well prepared car will sell quicker in the autumn to a keener market as there are fewer about. Wel, that's the theory!

See here for the ad
Looks nice! Mileage a little more than Id prefer, but appreciate at this age that's not so important. Has the outer cill been replaced as photo shows it off?

Hard to say really without seeing it, but having looked closely at the pictures...

AC Schnitzer chrome roll hoops are rare as hens teeth and worth £600+, it has style 42 split rims which is a big plus. Got a lot going for it, shame about the condition. I wouldn't want to spend more than £4k on a Z3 personally...

You could say its high mileage but its been driven, which is what these cars need to be. The low mileage ones that sit around tend to have more problems than a decent higher mileage one.

The sills were off so that the underneath could be treated and sealed to prevent corrosion in the future.

I wouldn't mind a dakar one, but they don't often come up for sale.

Welcome ! You can't forget the first love!
Luckily to come back to the Zed, it's not illegal! And not too expensive either.
Good hunting, what ever you'll find, will bring you joy!
