BMW Z3 Rear screen replacement
Well after splitting the plastic rear screen on my BMW Z3 I was left with no alternative but to seek out a replacement. An OEM screen is now in excess of £200 so I started a search for a good quality aftermarket one.

Basic BMW Z3 Suspension Modifications by Mike Fishwick
Back in the days when cars had a separate chassis it was not unusual for the driver to see that the radiator and bonnet were moving relative to the scuttle – the front of the body’s rigid area, on which the windscreen was mounted – as the chassis flexed. This phenomenon was known as ‘Scuttle Shake,’ and largely passed away with the advent of monocoque body structures.

BMW Z3 Club UK at ZRoadster.org
As it stands there is currently no dedicated BMW Z3 Club in the UK. There are plenty of useful resources out on the internet, and top of that list is the ZRoadster.org BMW Z3 Forum which has been running since December 2011. We like to think of ourselves as a BMW Z3 Club, as we do all the things that a car club does.

BMW Z3 Hard Top Fitting (1996 to 2002)
I fitted my fitting kit and hardtop a while ago now – but it wasn’t really perfect (I was about 95% happy with it).. It was weather tight – but I was getting a slight clunk from the rear when going over bad roads/potholes etc and a very slight wind noise. I always said I’d get round to sorting it out once and for all once time and weather permitted! and low and behold it was actually sunny here today for a change!!

BMW Z3 Seat Belt Guides (adding or changing)
How to fix issues with your BMW Z3 seat belt guides. It’s unfortunately common for the BMW Z3 seat belt guides to snap or break if you are not careful. It’s also quite common for roadster owners to retro fit the M Coupe seats as they are arguably more comfortable (and heated). However the Z3 Coupe seats don’t have a seat belt guide attached to the seat, as this was fixed to the B pillar in the car.

Choosing Engine Oil by Mike Fishwick
Many new owners seek advice about which oil to use for their BMW, and the best advice is to be found in the Owner’s Handbook, which has a couple of pages regarding engine oil – but it is unfortunately commonplace for previous owners to retain the handbook.

BMW Z3 Subtly Stiffening a Z3 by Mike Fishwick
The Z3 must be the most-maligned sports car ever built, most of the motoring press and television presenters pouring scorn on it, particularly for its use of ‘old fashioned’ semi-trailing arm rear suspension from the E36 Compact. The same people, of course, are full of hysterical praise for the E30 M3, which has the same suspension, but which is set up for a more specialised task.

BMW Z3 Resetting the Service Indicator by Mike Fishwick
The Service Indicator system operates the SI lights, which lose one of five green lights at a time, in response to the amount of fuel used – hard driving and/or cold running uses more fuel – changing to orange (Service due) and red (Service NOW!). The system also operates a two-year timer, which illuminates a clock symbol indicating that the coolant and brake fluid should be replaced.

BMW Z3 Replacing Heater Control Bulbs
As is the case with most of the BMW Z3, the heater controls are ‘borrowed’ from the E36 series, but in their new home there is far less space behind them than in the original application. This, coupled with the tight fit of the bulbs in their mountings, makes replacement less than easy.

BMW Oil and Filter Changes by Mike Fishwick
Many owners are terrified of losing that string of BMW Dealer stamps in their service book, believing that such expenditure may gain a better trade-in value or an easier private sale. Although this has a logic in terms of fairly new cars, an investment of maybe several thousand pounds will never be redeemed on a long-term car deemed by the trade to be virtually ‘worthless.’

Transmission Oil Changes by Mike Fishwick
The older BMW gearboxes were filled with either normal 75-80 EP gear oil or automatic transmission fluid, this being denoted by the use of either a brown or orange label near the filler plug, and owners of such cars therefore accept the need to change the oil from time to time. Many have found that the use of a more modern synthetic lubricant improves their gear change action, but if following this route, first find if your gearbox requires the use of GL3/GL4 oil only, or the modern GL5 standar

BMW Z3 A better air intake by Mike Fishwick
I have a feeling that the original design of the Z3 air intake system was dictated more by the space available, rather than engineering considerations. For example, the air filter is smaller than even that of the 8-valve Volkswagen Golf GTI, which is known to be obstructive on even a 1.8 litre engine. In 16-valve form the Golf filter is enlarged to almost double the size of that used on the 2.8 or 3 litre Z3 and the 3.2 litre M Roadster.

BMW Z3 Fitting a Smaller Steering Wheel by Mike Fishwick
I have always found that manufacturers tend to fit their sportier models with steering wheels which are larger than necessary, apparently believing that customers are all would-be truck drivers, and BMW is no exception. Worse still, the M-Technic wheel fitted to my Z3 had a hard rim of a peculiar shape, with hard pieces of plastic designed to cut into one’s thumbs. After two hundred miles my fingers were sore, and a four hundred mile day left my hands in pain; a replacement was necessary – but

BMW Z3 M52TU Thermostat Replacement by Mike Fishwick
When the M52TU double-VANOS versions of the established M52 engine were introduced in September 1998, it featured a cooling system thermostat which was electrically controlled. These thermostats are now widely used, as they enable the engine management system to maintain coolant temperature within very close limits.
